While Aarya ended her day on a positive note, Elias’ night had just begun. He walked into the Woodlands Business Center and was greeted by Bruno’s off-key singing. The werewolf had no gift for song; he believed that volume was the one ingredient that made singing great, and so Elias went into the kitchen and was blasted by Bruno’s near-screaming rendition of “Hawaiian Sunset.”

“THE DROWSY ISLANDS SLUMBER ONE BY ONE, CLOSE THEIR SLEEPY EYELIDS, SAY GOODNIGHT TO THE SUN!”

The werewolf was rummaging in the refrigerator, his bottom swaying back and forth in time with his singing.

“THEN HAWAII, LIKE MILLIONS OF TIMES BEFORE, BLOSSOMS IN HER LOVER’S ARMS ONCE MORE. . . .”

Elias stuck his head into the kitchen. He was about to speak, but the werewolf belted again: “TOO SOON THE SUNRISE . . . .”

“Bruno, please shut up,” Elias implored him.

“Well, look who’s back.” Bruno straightened up, holding a package of sliced turkey in one hand and linked sausages in the other. “Oh, look who finally got rid of his girly haircut! Well, kind of. You traded it in for the boy band look. I was wondering where you run off to. Wasn’t sure if you’d be back. I left you some coffee, though.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it.”

“Where else have you been?” The werewolf tore the plastic case from the sausages, first piercing it with his teeth, then peeling it away with his yellow fingernails. “You were gone a long time. Looking for a vivacious twenty-year-old to sink your teeth into?”

“No.”

“Hanging around the nunnery with your new friend?”

Elias paused at the cupboard, his hand half-raised toward the coffee mugs.

“That’s right,” Bruno said. “We’ve seen you with your vampire pal. A wolf among sheep, isn’t she? Clever. Don’t know if I could pull it off, but good on her.” He glanced back at Elias. “Or didn’t she turn?”

“Are you following us?” Elias turned to face him, trying not to show his anxiety.

“You have a problem? Following is our game.”

Elias nodded. He spoke in an emotionless tone. “Exactly. Following is our game. Being followed is not. I rather dislike it.”

Bruno shrugged. He cradled the meat packages in one hand and pulled a beer from the fridge with the other. “And I dislike your high and mighty attitude, but I live with it. I guess some of the things we do just can’t be helped.”

He left the kitchen with his meal. Elias stood and listened to the retreating sounds of his footsteps.

The house was relatively quiet after Bruno went into his room. Slowly, Elias went about the task of pouring coffee and finding something to eat. The mini cheesecake had done nothing to sate his hunger, but Bruno had already ransacked the fridge, leaving it nearly empty except for condiments and beer. Elias settled for a sandwich with peanut butter and strawberry jam. It seemed a crude meal, but so did any meal he could have imagined at the moment. Once again, the task of chewing and digesting food seemed tedious and gross.
